Revision and preparation tips for Year 6
Structuring the Revision
- Make a routine early in the year and do 'little and often': Short, frequent sessions (15–20 minutes, 3 times a week) are much more effective than long cramming sessions closer to May.
- Keep it balanced: Ensure your child still has plenty of time for hobbies, outdoor play, and relaxation. SATs are a checkpoint, not a definition of their future.
English Preparation Tips
- Daily reading: Encourage reading for pleasure for at least 15 minutes every day. Ask them questions about the text to build comprehension skills, such as explaining a character's motives.
- Focus on spelling and grammar terms: Year 6 pupils need to know technical terms like subordinating conjunctions, fronted adverbials, and passive voice. Ask the class teacher for information or simply keep up with the set homework and CGP books.
- Dictation practice: Read short sentences aloud for them to write down, focusing heavily on accurate punctuation (like commas, apostrophes, and inverted commas).
Maths Preparation Tips
- Master times tables: Instant recall of multiplication and division facts up to 12x12 is the single best foundation for the entire maths paper. Use apps, songs, or quick-fire verbal quizzes.
- Secure the four operations: Ensure they are completely confident with formal written methods for addition, subtraction, long multiplication, and long division.
- Deconstruct word problems: Reasoning papers require reading comprehension as much as maths. Teach them to underline key words, identify what the question is actually asking, and estimate a sensible answer first.
Exam Technique & Wellbeing
- Use past papers wisely: We will be doing past SATs papers every term in class, so no need to seek these out.
- Normalise mistakes: Frame errors as valuable learning opportunities rather than failures.
- Prioritise sleep and routine: In the weeks leading up to the tests, stick to a regular bedtime. A well-rested brain handles exam nerves significantly better.
- Don't over-study!! We will provide more than adequate preparation for these tests in school.
